The fragile sand peninsula of Reel Point Preserve is a beautiful wildlife habitat at the tip of Ram Island on Shelter Island. The peninsula is a haven for migratory birds and butterflies, including osprey, piping plovers and Monarchs. It also provides a protective barrier for Coecles Harbor from high seas. However, the preserve’s existence is threatened by erosion caused by heavy winds and wave action, primarily during major storm events.
Over the years the Trust, in partnership with the Town of Shelter Island, Suffolk County, and neighbors from Ram Island, has worked to stabilize the land. This month, Suffolk County is replenishing the shoreline of the preserve. The channel at Coecles Harbor is being dredged with the sand and stones being moved back on to the preserve.
