Places to Visit | Paddle by the Smith Corner Preserve on Sagg Pond

Summer is a great time to get the kayak out and go for a paddle. While paddling, you’ll be able to see some of the Trust’s preserves that are best viewed from the water. One such preserve is the Smith Corner Preserve in Sagaponack. In 1989, the Trust purchased 19.6 acres of shorefront, meadow, and farmland on Sagg Pond. This was accomplished through the generosity of 9 neighbors who provided the funds necessary for the acquisition and stewardship of the property.

The preserve includes an extensive shoreline on Sagg Pond and an upland meadow. This area provides a nice habitat for many mammals, migratory birds, as well as duck, goose, and swan populations.

There are no trails on the preserve since a portion of it has historically been set aside for agriculture. However, you can admire Smith Corner Preserve from Sagg Pond. The Village of Sagaponack maintains a parking area and bench at the front of the preserve off of Bridge Lane. From the parking area you can launch a kayak or other personal watercraft into Sagg Pond. While paddling, you’ll have a wonderful view of both the Smith Corner Preserve and the adjacent property which is protected by a conservation easement. The property has approximately 1,475 feet of shoreline along the pond.
