Conservation News
Since July, the Trust has been working with the Koehler family to find a conservation alternative to the development of their 15-acre parcel along Deep Hole Creek in Mattituck. We are so happy to share with you that, as of this month, we are in contract to purchase the property. We are very grateful to the Koehler family for choosing to collaborate with the Trust, Southold Town, and you, the community, to achieve a conservation outcome.

The Trust stepped forward to permanently protect this property, but not to own it indefinitely. In fact, a key component to financing this acquisition is the sale of the property to a conservation buyer, especially one who will keep the farmland in production. If you or anyone you know is interested in owning this property once protected, please let us know.

If all goes well, we anticipate closing by year end. At that time, the Town will purchase the development rights on the parcel, protecting the land in perpetuity. By selling the protected parcel, we hope to restore our funds so that we can protect another conservation gem on the East End.

Additional funds will be needed to get us to closing. Interested in donating or learning more about this project? Please contact Alison Delaney, Development Officer or Holly Sanford, Project Manager.
