About
Beginning in the late 1970s, the legendary Christian Wölffer began acquiring farmland in Sagaponack -- establishing Wolffer Estate Vineyards in 1987. With the benefit of fertile Bridgehampton loam soil and the Atlantic Ocean breezes, today Wölffer is an internationally recognized vineyard producing award winning wines along with cider and gin.
In 2001, Mr. Wölffer had assembled 146 acres of farmland in Sagaponack, and took the proactive step of protecting 115 acres through a sale of development rights to Southampton Town and Suffolk County. The Peconic Land Trust assisted in the transaction, working with Mr. Wölffer to assure that his conservation aspirations for the land were fulfilled.
Christian was steadfast in his goal to create a South Fork wine trail, and he encouraged other local growers to plant wine producing grapes. Rather than shying away from possible competition, he welcomed their participation knowing that it would help gain the public's attention to the value of South Fork wines, and make the area a wine destination similar to the North Fork.
The farmland includes 55 acres of productive estate vines along with equestrian lands -- and provides an iconic scenic vista from Montauk Highway.
Today, the estate is owned and operated by Mr. Wölffer's children, Marc and Joey Wölffer and winemaker/partner Roman Roth who are continuing his legacy and traditions.
