About

The Peconic Land Trust worked with The Island's End Golf & Country Club, and the King and Turner families to protect 126.71 acres of land including shoreline on the Long Island Sound -- the largest, single conservation project by the Town of Southold.

The protection was finalized on December 6, 2019 when the Town of Southold acquired the development rights. The Town was able to fund the purchase through the Town of Southold's Community Preservation Fund. Click here to learn more about the Community Preservation Fund.

The property remains the only 18 hole golf course on the North Fork open to the general public. This provides recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. The golf course has also provided a place for local high school golf teams to play.

Southold Town Supervisor, Scott Russell remarked at the time of conservation: “This is an exciting purchase and a great opportunity. Not only was this the largest preservation project in the history of the Town program, it ensures that the last remaining public golf course on the East End continues to operate for all to enjoy. We are deeply grateful to the property owners and to the Peconic Land Trust. Without them, this would never had been achieved.”

While golfers are out on the course they can enjoy natural views including a spectacular view of Long Island Sound from the 16th hole. The property has 800 feet of shoreline that will remain undeveloped. Of particular note are the 40,000 trees amongst the fairways. Those trees are thanks to the N.Y.S. Forestry Service and their tree planting program that ran for several years in the 1960s on the property.

The conservation of this land not only helps golfers, but provides additional habitat for wildlife. Red Tail hawks, foxes, Grey Horn owls, and deer will continue to call this place home become the property is restricted to recreational, open space or agriculture use.

“The conservation of this land – including all acreage along Long Island Sound and the mature wildlife habitat that is established within the fairways – is an extraordinary conservation outcome for all.”

John v.H. Halsey, President, Peconic Land Trust.
