The loss of farmland threatens the future of local food, econonic viability of agriculture and our quality of life within Suffolk County. Conservation of the remaining farmland is critical.Â
The following are resources for farmland owners interested in conservation options:Â
- 2019 Ag Forum Presentation: Conservation Options for Farmland Owners
- Conservation Options for Farmland Owners brochure (pdf). This brochure was funded by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Farmland Access Outreach Activities grant program.Â
The Trust has also worked with the towns of Southampton and Riverhead to study the remaining farmland in the towns and to develop strategies to keep farmland in active, and productive, agricultural production. To learn more about these studies, please contact Kim Quarty, Director of Conservation Planning at 631.283.3195.Â
Both the Riverhead and Southampton studies are primarily funded by grants to the Peconic Land Trust through the Conservation Partnership Program, a grant program supported by funds from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund and administered by the Land Trust Alliance and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.
