Driving along Montauk Highway in Wainscott you may have noticed changes occurring at the Trust’s Georgica Pond Preserve. Since acquiring the property last August, we’ve designed plans for the site, installed an eco-barrier, removed existing structures, and partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County on groundwater studies and Stony Brook University’s Gobler Laboratory on PFAS analysis.
Later this summer our stewardship team will begin to implement some of our design plans. This includes invasive species management and native plantings. Existing ornamental plants will be removed and a native seed planting will occur across the site.
We would like to thank Katharine Rayner for her continued support. Without her these changes would not be occurring at the preserve.
Last Saturday, paddlers who joined our Georgica Pond Nature Paddle learned first hand about the changes occurring at the site from James Brako McComb, Land Steward & GIS Technician. They were joined by Seatuck wildlife biologist Mike Bottini, and Sara Davison, Executive Director of Friends of Georgica Pond Foundation to learn about the pond’s unique natural history as well as several important conservation measures underway to protect the future of its ecosystem.
