Memorial Bench Placed at Townsend Observation Area

On a recent beautiful autumn day, a handmade bench was placed at the Townsend Observation Area, named for Joseph L. Townsend,Jr., in recognition of the outstanding work he did for the Peconic Land Trust and the East End. He was instrumental in the preservation of Edwards Farm and Widow’s Hole Preserve in Greenport.

The handcrafted bench was made by local artist and woodcarver, David Nyce. David, along with Troy Gustavson, were there to help install the bench on Friday, November 6 in honor of their friend Joe.

They were assisted by Senior Adviser Tim Caufield, Director of Agricultural Programs Dan Heston, and Land Steward Brendan Minogue.

Please take a stroll down to the Townsend Observation Area, located at the south end of Edwards Farm in Orient. While sitting on the bench, enjoy views of Orient Beach State Park and Little Bay and the many birds that call this place home. Visit our places to visit page for more information.
