A Note from Layton and Scott: Welcome!

As we work in the Quail Hill fields we are delighted by the musical accompaniment. Because we encourage the wild that surrounds our fields we receive daily the musical chatter of red-wing blackbirds, catbirds, bluebirds, cardinals, mourning doves, at times a phoebe, orioles and finches, the red-tailed hawk, and the sharp-shinned…as we traverse the fields by foot, by tractor, by truck, plowing, transplanting, cultivating, communing.
We allow ourselves, amid the rigor of work, to listen to the music, and we invite you to do so as well. There is order in the chorus, and chaos too, some prayer, some argument, some pianissimo, some harmony too that we know deep down we are part of. I’ve heard it and felt it for thirty years in this place. Thank you for taking part, and for listening…Welcome back!
Are you ready for some … King Richard Leeks!
Thank you to all the volunteers who joined us for our annual Transplanting Day in the fields.
With all the extra hands we planted thousands of leeks — King Richard and Lincoln — on our Birch Hill field off of Deep Lane.
With a favorable helping of sun and rain and luck we will harvest these alliums come September.
The Quail Hill Farm Summer CSA Starts on June 8
Despite the cold and wet weather, followed by a dry and hot spell more recently, we are prepping, planting, irrigating and cultivating to open the CSA season on Saturday June 8. Our farm community can expect to see rhubarb, head lettuce, escarole, fennel, scallions, spinach and more!
This summer, we will grow over 550 varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers. Farm favorites like “Mardi Gras” tricolor green beans, Sungold cherry tomatoes, shishito peppers and candy-striped beets will be back, and we’ve been experimenting with some new varieties like Honeynut squash (a delicious, single-serving butternut), Aji Dulce caribbean seasoning peppers (resembling habaneros with zero heat!), Purple Peacock sprouting broccoli, and much more! And, we are busy planning wonderful farm member-only events, including our annual Farm Breakfast, Pot Luck and At the Common Table.
